The state highway A4 between Delft and Schiedam

The motorway A4 Delft-Schiedam is the connecting link between the old A4 at the Kruithuisweg in Delft, and the A20 at the Kethelplein. The road has a lenght of 7 kilometers and runs through Midden Delfland and between the urban area of Vlaardingen and Schiedam.

The department of Rijkswaterstaat and the province of Zuid-Holland are working together on a geographically focused quality program (an elaboration of the so-called Plan Norder). Based on the plan for integral development between Delft and Schiedam (IODS), all parties are striving for quality improvement of the countryside and the urban environment, job opportunities in the southern part of the Randstad, and projects that stimulate the flow of traffic.
The building of motorway A4 is therefore a crucial part of the IODS program. The most important issues are the organisation of the area and the quality improvement in Midden Delfland, the building of seven missing kilometers of the A4 between Delft and Schiedam, and an adequate spatial planning for fitting in the stretch between Schiedam and Vlaardingen. This should lead to fewer traffic jams, less sound pollution, and cleaner air along these roads.

NIVEM had a consulting role in the financing of this project, and made the proposition to generate extra revenues from the development of real estate.
The next step in the procedure is the start-up report, which contains an up-to-date problem analysis and describes how Rijkswaterstaat will work out the different variants of the A4 between Delft and Schiedam and the alternatives for this connection in the Route Study/EIA phase. The definitive Route Decision is scheduled for 2006.
